Wheat and Cereals Display

Wheat and Cereals Display

A detailed display of cereals has been constructed in our garner floor display area. The seed spikes or 'ears' of common species are displayed in cases inside the mill on the garner floor.

The case shown below is based on specimens grown in the miller's garden. It describes the evolution of wheat, from the ancient wild grasses and goat grasses, through to modern durum wheat and bread wheat.

The second display contains three other cereals, two of which are grown in Britain. Oat, on the left, is less common since the loss of the working farm horse. Barley, in the centre, is an important and common cereal used for animal feed and in beer brewing. Rye is shown on the right, is now very rarely grown in Britain.
