New Hall Mill Update 08 Mar 25

Last Thursday was a beautiful sunny day for 37 Friends to get a lot done outside and still have time for lunch in the sunshine. Woodpeckers could be heard nearby competing with the noise of the parakeets.
The 'Dead Hedge' continued to take shape. All the brash (branches, tops, and dead wood) from the recently pollarded trees was gathered up and moved to an area adjacent to the hedge to be used for further building.

The fence outside the main gate was rebuilt and painted.

The new fruit cage was assembled.

Additional slabs were laid to widen the main path.

Two Hazels were coppiced.

Three birdboxes were placed on trees in the spinney and a high-rise ‘wildlife wigwam’ was built.

The compost was riddled ready for potting plants.
A number of small, self seeded, trees growing too close to the sewer rodding points near the tail race were cut down.
The pond was full and the tank was over-full due to debris blocking the tail race. This debris was raked out and the water flow restored to allow the tank to fall to its normal level.

Work on the wall around the silt pit below the dam continued and work has started on backfilling the area behind the dam.

The feed screw which formerly carried the flour from the second mill stone to the bagging chute was hung on display above its housing.

The foundations for Auntie Wainwright’s new shed were completed last week, and delivery is scheduled for this week.

There are only ten Sundays left before our first open day of the year. The countdown has begun! If you'd like to volunteer you'd be very welcome, and it's an ideal time to start, as there's a training morning coming up soon!
