The Door to Nowhere

The Door to Nowhere

The doorway at the end of the Stone Floor is where sacks of grain were unloaded into the mill and where sacks of meal left the mill. In this photo from 1890 you can see the miller and a child standing in the original doorway, with a loaded cart below it.

When the stone floor level was raised, the original doorway was bricked up and a new doorway was created to its left, about 15" higher, to match the level of the new raised floor.

You can still see the position of the original door to the left of the current one. It is easily identified by the courses of larger bricks.

The hole in the current door was cut by miller Ben Davis as a way for the swallows to get in and out of the mill.
